When should kids start brushing their own teeth

I’ve been getting a lot of questions from parents about the right age for their kids to start brushing independently. Generally, I recommend that by age 6 or 7, many children can manage it with supervision. It’s crucial, though, to make sure they understand proper technique to prevent cavities early.

I totally agree with getting kids brushing on their own around age 6 or 7. I remember my daughter thought she could just swipe the toothbrush around and call it a day — until I made it a game to brush ‘away the sugar monsters.’ It really helped her focus on technique and enjoy brushing.
